Foot Protection Clinic
A collaborative clinic developed to prevent foot complications in those with diabetes has been extended to twice monthly.
The Foot Protection Programme provides foot care to those with diabetes and comprises a multidisciplinary team including endocrinologists, nurse specialists in diabetes, podiatrists, nurse specialists in tissue viability, orthotists, and vascular surgeons. A special Foot Protection Clinic for those at high risk of foot ulcer or who have already developed foot complications related to diabetes has been running in AMNCH since May 2008. Almost 100 patients have been seen, assessed, terated and supplied with custom footwear to prevent foot ulcers or to help existing ulcers to heal.
The clinic is a collaborative effort between AMNCH and Opcare - the biggest supplier in ireland of orthotics and prosthetics.
Patients who attend the diabetic services in Naas General Hospital or AMNCH can be referred to the clinic for special assessment as required.
